Stainless Steel 316 is a chromium-nickel based steel that possesses increased levels of resistance against several substances, due to the addition of molybdenum. As a fully austenitic grade it possesses excellent toughness, even down to cryogenic temperatures. Type 304L stainless steel is an extra-low carbon version of the 304 steel alloy. It’s also non-magnetic, so it won’t interfere with sensitive equipment. The metallurgical composition of grade 316L stainless steel means it’s a low-allergy material. The 316 family is a group of austenitic stainless steels with superior corrosion resistance to 304 stainless steels. It also provides higher creep, stress-to-rupture and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than a basic Alloy 304. 316L is a biocompatible stainless steel when produced to ASTM F138 / F139 standards. Since SS 316L has a much lower carbon content than SS316, the welding of 316L stainless steel is better than SS 316. The alloy has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. It also resists corrosion in polluted marine atmospheres. It is often utilized in process streams containing chlorides or halides. Alloy 316L resists atmospheric corrosion, as well as, moderately oxidising and reducing environments. Alloy 316/316L (UNS S31600/ S31603) is a chromium-nickel- molybdenum austenitic stainless steel developed to provide improved corrosion resistance to Alloy 304/304L in moderately corrosive environments. The addition of Mo provides the product with much improved corrosion resistance compared with Alloy 304, particularly with respect to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Due to the presence of molybdenum, 316 and 316L stainless steels exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.
